The Front Row: Texas Tech's Opera Theatre Presents Lehar's 'The Merry Widow'

Nov 1, 2018

The Texas Tech University School of Music, housed within the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, will host two performances of Franz Lehar's operetta, “The Merry Widow.” The opera is presented by the Texas Tech Opera Theatre with musical collaboration from the University Symphony Orchestra. Eric Fried and Kyla Olson join the Front Row to give more information on the performances.

The Merry Widow, How did that come up to be the opera of choice for this fall?

That’s a very good question.  I actually didn’t pick this, I was recruited in September to conduct this opera.  It had already been picked by Gerald Dolter and his faculty members and they asked me to conduct it and I was just delighted.  I love this operetta.  It’s just a delightful piece of music, it’s just full of all my favorite kinds of music.  It has Viennese waltz, it has Polish style polonaises and mazurkas, it has marches and even can-can music.  It will be a real fun time for the audience.
