Drum Fill Friday, From The Antlers' Michael Lerner

Credit Andy Sheppard / Redferns

The selections in this week's drum fill quiz come from the amazing Michael Lerner, drummer for The Antlers. Somehow he found time to put this list together for us while the band was finishing up it's new EP, Undersea. I thought it was a pretty challenging quiz, but see what you think.

Drag the drum fill or intro to the album it's from. If you get it right, the song names will appear.

'Klown': Childish Raunch With Adult Consequences

Originally published on Fri July 27, 2012 2:06 pm

The success of R-rated comedies in recent years might as well be broken down to a formula: blend boundary-pushing raunch comedy with heartfelt sentimentality — and if you're most movies produced by Judd Apatow, center the story on male coming-of-age, even for characters well into adulthood. Teary eyes, full raunch, can't lose.

At the time of singer-songwriter Sonya Kitchell's first Mountain Stage appearance, recorded in June 2005, she was only 16 — and had released her first album, Words Come Back to Me, just a year earlier. In this archived performance, Kitchell visits Mountain Stage in support of that album, and shows off what host Larry Groce calls "unusual charm and maturity." Her set begins solo before the Mountain Stage band joins her to close out the show.

Ocean's 'Orange' Revolution

Originally published on Thu July 26, 2012 5:35 pm

Born in New Orleans and still in his mid-20s, Frank Ocean has already written songs for major pop stars. He sang on the Kanye West/Jay-Z collaboration Watch the Throne, and he's been part of the tumultuous Los Angeles musical collective known as Odd Future. None of which quite prepares a listener for the beautifully moody music that dominates his new album, Channel Orange.

For his uncompromising and serious music, the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival was eager to present Charles Lloyd. He could bring any group he wanted, they told him. Lloyd said yes, and that he would bring Sangam, an East-West trio with one CD and few performances on the schedule. It was a coup!
